Chetan Bhagat is a famous Indian author, Columnist and screenwriter. Born in a middle class Punjabi family in New Delhi, Chetan had his early education in Delhi. He did his mechanical engineering from IIT Delhi and later opted for a management degree in IIM Ahmedabad. For his excellent performances Chetan was titled as the “best outgoing student” of his batch. In 1998 Chetan got married to Anusha Suryanarayanan, one of his batch mates in IIM-A and then moved to Hong Kong and worked as an investment banker. There he worked for 11 years at Goldman Sachs and eventually returned to Mumbai to focus full time on his writing career. Chetan, a simple living man now leads a happy life with his wife and twin sons, Ishaan and Shyam.

His vivid style of writing and his youth oriented issues has made him the Youth Icon of the country. , The New York Times cited Bhagat as “the biggest selling English language novelist in India’s history”. Chetan, is also a renowned columnist and writes for prestigious dailies like The Times of India and Dainik Bhaskar regarding major social and national issues of concern. FIVE POINT SOMEONE (2004)
It is a story about three friends from IIT- Alok, Hari and Ryan and there continuous struggle to deal with the system there. Their ecstasy when they made it to IIT was soon deflated when they got acquainted with the mundane fights for Grades there. The Story is filled with humor and deals with the efforts of the trio to cope up with the system and Hari’s fling with the daughter of the Domineering head of the College. This debut of Chetan became a best seller soon after its release and was also filmed into a blockbuster movie “3 Idiots” by Raj Kumar Hirani.
ONE NIGHT@ THE CALL CENTER (2005)
The story of this novel revolves around the lives of six call center employees working in a night shift in Connexions , Gurgaon , Haryana. But tonight is no ordinary night, that night al the characters were made to confront such things in their lives that they might want to change. The author then uses the element of imagination and Connexions received a call from God. This book is also filmed into a Salman Khan starrer movie Hello in 2008.
THE THREE MISTAKES OF MY LIFE (2008)
This is the third novel by Chetan . The novel is based on the lives of three friends from the western city of Ahmedabad. The story is about Govind’s dreams of having a huge business in which he involves his friends Ishaan’s and Omi’s passion too and they start with opening a cricket shop. Their different perspectives towards life and the difficulties offered to them by the turbulent city is all the book deals with. In their struggle for success they were made to confront everything from religious, political issues, unrequited love and even their own mistakes. The book was adapted as a movie KAI PO CHE! in 2013 starring Sushant Rajput.
2 STATES : The Story of my Marriage (2009)
This book is largely based on Bhagat’s own life. It is a story of a young couple, krish and Ananya, who belonged to two different states of the country. The couple madly and deeply in love with each other want to get married, but faces a lot of hardships while convincing their parents to approve of their marriage. The Film adaptation of the novel was directed by Siddharth Anand with Alia Bhatt and Arjun Kapoor in lead roles.
REVOLUTION 2020; LOVE CORRUPTION AND AMBITION (2011)
Revolution 2020 is a love triangle and also it shows the corruption in today’s education system. The story is set in the city of Varanasi, and uses the characters of three childhood friends Gopal, Raghav and Aarti. It shows the struggle of the trio to find love and success in Varanasi and the vices and rampant corruption in the youth education system. The contrast of a conservative city and modern aspirations of the people there is the essence of the book.
WHAT YOUNG INDIA WANTS (2012)
It is a non- fiction book by Bhagat, which is a compilation of his essays and Public speeches he made. The book deals with the complex issues of Indian society, Politics and the Youth. Bhagat expresses his vision on these issues and offers solutions and invites discussions on them. In the book Bhagat talks about the major concerns prevailing in the society, vices of Political system, corruption and what reforms should be adopted to get rid of it. The central idea of the book is free and Forward thinking India.
HALF GIRLFRIEND (2014)
This is a young adult romance by Bhagat. The story is set in Bihar, New Delhi and New York. The story deals with Madhav, a Hindi speaking Bihari boy and his quest of love for Riya, an elite Delhi girl. It shows the linguistic struggles faced by Madhav when he get himself enrolled in the prestigious ST. Stephen’s College Delhi. Bhagat here puts forward a modern day concept of HALF GIRLFRIEND where the guy and the girl are not sure about their relationship. Its Bollywood film adaptation will be directed by Mohit Suri and will star will star Arjun Kapoor and Shraddha Kapoor. It movie will be produced by Ekta kapoor and Bhagat himself. This will be Bhagat’s first production venture.
MAKING INDIA AWESOME (2015)
After the success of his first nonfiction book Bhagat is came with yet another collection of essays dealing with the problems of our society. In the book Bhagat analyses the most intractable concerns of Indian Society like poverty, unemployment, corruption, violence against women, communal violence, religious fundamentalism, illiteracy and provides solutions to deal with it and how an individual can have his part in this struggle for reform. The book is written in a simple language and uses practical and rational facts for the readers.
ONE INDIAN GIRL (2017)
Chetan has never been diffident of Controversies and he is coming with yet another book that will deal with the very sensitive issue of Feminism and Female liberation. It is the story of a sexually liberated woman, which has given a tantalizing topic of debate to both his supporters and protestors and the so called protectors of Indian values and Cultures. Through his work Bhagat wanted to make an allusion to the absurd choices women are forced to make while being a part of the society. The book is yet to come so not much is known about it.
